CALL NOW (970) 818-1613The Heat Exchanger Explained
The heat exchanger is the most critical component in your gas furnace. It is a set of metal coils or tubes that separates the combustion gases from the air circulating through your home.
When your furnace fires, the burners heat the inside of the heat exchanger. Air from your home blows over the outside, absorbing warmth without mixing with combustion gases.
Why It Matters
The heat exchanger transfers heat efficiently while keeping carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts completely separated from your indoor air.

Signs of a Cracked Heat Exchanger
- Carbon monoxide alarm activation: Evacuate immediately and call emergency services
- Yellow or flickering burner flame: A healthy flame is steady and blue
- Soot buildup: Black carbon deposits inside the furnace
- Strange odors: Unusual smell when the furnace runs
- Frequent illness: Headaches or nausea that improve when you leave the house
- Visible cracks: Found during professional inspection
What Causes Heat Exchanger Failure
- Age: Heat exchangers typically last 15 to 20 years
- Overheating: Restricted airflow from dirty filters causes overheating
- Poor maintenance: Skipping annual inspections allows small problems to become dangerous
Repair or Replace?
A cracked heat exchanger cannot be patched. Replacing it costs $1,500 to $3,000. If your furnace is over 15 years old, full replacement is usually the better value.
